A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

Something we have observed in our short time here in Thailand is just how spiritual the Thai people are. Entire cities and villages are built around ornately designed temples. On a morning walk down a busy road near a temple you will find "alms-givers", "making-merit", in order to receive a blessing from a monk. Cities are sprinkled with carefully crafted shrines- offerings and gifts placed at each one.

Buddhism teaches that life is full of suffering, everything in life is impermanent and always changing and because nothing is permanent, a life based on possessing things or persons doesn't make you happy. Instead people strive to follow the "Middle Path" in order to seek an end to suffering. This involves doing many things "right"...right understanding, right speech, right values, right action, right work, right effort, right mindfulness, and right meditation.  (https://www.uri.org/kids/world-religions/buddhist-beliefs)

Humanity could probably agree that life is full of longing, unmet needs, discomfort, and disappointment and everyone is trying to find a solution--- merit making, addiction, career success, financial stability. We want to know how to escape the pain or at least gain control over it.

Jesus offers a better solution. Yes the things of this world are fleeting. The created things will never provide the sustenance we seek but we have a Creator God who made all things and he invites us to shed our dependence on "shakable things" for a kingdom that "cannot be shaken" (Hebrews 12- see above). He doesn't offer us a way out of suffering. Instead he guides us through it because He knows that on the other side there is so much more. He invites us into the fullness of life that is found only in Him- a life of wonder and awe.

"God of the wild, in this new season I invite You to shape my soul with Your words and inspire my life through Your works. Show me where I'm clinging to comfort and lead me into greater wonder today". (Lectio 365, Wednesday January 13, Wild Kingdom, Phil Togwell).

Pray for the people of Thailand

That they would encounter the Creator God and accept His invitation into the fullness of life through Jesus Christ.
